Reflexologist Toronto - What is foot reflexology? Hand reflexology? Face and Ear reflexology? And what does reflexology do?

What is reflexology, and what’s a certified reflexologist?

Reflexology is type of massage where your practitioner applies pressure, kneading, and stretching to specific areas of your feet, hands, and sometimes ears. A certified reflexologist is a practitioner who has received special training in the theories and practices of reflexology so they can provide a safe and effective treatment. Certified

reflexologists in Ontario will often be Registered Massage Therapists (RMT) or Registered Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners (R. TCMP).

What is reflexology good for?

Reflexology is based on the principle that specific parts of the body map to other parts and organs, and applying therapeutic treatments on specific reflexes can relieve tension, improve circulation, and help the body to function optimally. It’s a soothing treatment that can leave you feeling calm and healthier with a more even feeling of energy flow.

What are the benefits of getting a reflexology treatment from an RMT in Toronto?

Is reflexology covered by insurance?

The benefits of seeing an RMT for reflexology is that we are trained to provide safe and effective treatments. An RMT in Ontario has passed CMTO board exams that include stringent knowledge testing of relevant anatomy, neurology, pathology and safe practices.

Another benefit of seeing an RMT is that your insurance coverage for massage normally also applies for your reflexology treatment. If you have questions about your coverage, it’s best to check in with your insurance company or plan provider before booking your reflexology treatment.

Reflexologist Bloor Toronto

Reflexology has a long tradition in Traditional Chinese Medicine of mapping specific pressure points to areas and organs of the body. The feet include one set of pressure

points, the hand another set, and so on. As RMTs, we do not make the claim that the pressure points have any effect on their mapped organs, however, we can

confidently say that reflexology has the potential to be soothing and relaxing, and it

can help improve feelings of balance and calm energy.

What are Reflexology side effects?

The most common side effect with reflexology is pain and bruising if pressure is applied too deep or if the patient has sensitive skin or neurology. An RMT who is trained in reflexology knows how to apply pressure appropriately and ensure that they have sufficient knowledge about your health to provide a safe treatment.

Can you do reflexology while pregnant? Does reflexology induce labour?

Yes, reflexology can be wonderfully therapeutic while you are pregnant. Foot reflexology can relieve tension and improve balance as your body adjusts to carrying your growing baby. There isn’t much scientific evidence supporting the claim that reflexology induces labour, however there is a pressure point on the hand and one on the ankle that have been traditionally used to induce labour late in the 3rd trimester.

Is reflexology good for headaches?

Reflexology is great for tension relief and improving sleep and overall wellbeing, and this may lead to headache relief.

Is reflexology good for lower back pain?

By relieving tension, reflexology can help balance out muscles in the feet and lower legs in a way that improves balance and overall function. Since lower back pain can

be caused by imbalances that affect the body from the feet and legs, reflexology may be helpful in reducing this pain.

Is reflexology good for constipation symptoms?

Massage Therapy, including Reflexology, can be very relaxing, and this promotes activity of the parasympathetic nervous system, also known as the rest-and-digest

nervous system. In this way, you may feel benefits to your digestion and relief of constipation symptoms. You may also consider abdominal massage to soothe and

improve digestion.

Is reflexology good for coughs and colds?

Reflexology has not been proven to relieve the presence of cough and colds, however when you enter the relaxed rest-and-digest state associated with reflexology, your immune system gets a boost, and you generally feel more comfortable. In this way, reflexology can offer a feeling of relief from your cough and cold symptoms.

What does it mean when a reflexology point hurts?

Generally, the pain is felt because you have tense muscles or other irritations in the area of the pressure point. We encourage you to communicate with your practitioner

if you feel any pain or discomfort so they can adjust their techniques. Pain is rarely necessary or beneficial in order to achieve positive results.

Does reflexology tickle?

Your RMT is trained in approaches that are firm and decisive so that they do not tend to be ticklish. If you have especially ticklish feet or hands, please let your RMT know so they can be extra cautious with their contact.
