What is a Swedish Massage?

Swedish Massage techniques normally include broad, soothing strokes that help promote healthy circulation along with deeper muscle kneading techniques to reduce tension. Swedish massage can also include tapotement techniques (like chopping and pounding) to either enliven or relax muscles, vibration techniques to soothe the nervous system, or friction techniques to reduce adhesions.

What is Swedish Massage vs therapeutic massage? And what is Swedish relaxation massage?

There is a common view that Swedish Massage is different from Therapeutic Massage, but Swedish just refers to a given set of techniques and principles designed to provide a safe and effective treatment. Swedish Relaxation massage tends to include long, sweeping strokes and muscle kneading/manipulation without necessarily including deep and direct pressure, however it can also be combined with other treatment types to get to those specific tight spots. Talk with your RMT before your treatment to discuss your goals and we can make a treatment that works for you.

What's the difference between a Swedish Massage and Deep Tissue?

Deep Tissue massage refers to a treatment where the RMT gets down to the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. Your RMT will generally still use Swedish techniques to warm up you up before using deeper, more specific techniques, so the two styles can often be used together. Swedish massage on its own, without deep tissue, can still be quite effective at helping your body relax and release tension, so talk with your RMT before your treatment to figure out what works best for you.

Is Swedish massage good for back pain?

Swedish Massage can be great for many causes of back pain. If your pain is very acute or you’ve had an injury, it may be best to check with your doctor before coming for massage.

Can I get a Swedish massage while pregnant?

Yes, provided you are healthy and having a normal pregnancy, Swedish Massage can be a safe and effective part of your selfcare routine. After the first few weeks of pregnancy (and often even during the first few weeks) your RMT will position you so you’re lying on your side. Pillows are provided for under your head, between your knees, and one more to cuddle for comfort and support. This position ensures that pressure is not applied to your fetus or valuable internal blood vessels and organs.

If you are having an abnormal pregnancy, massage may still be a good option for you, but it’s best to check in with your doctor or RMT before you book an appointment.

Why is it called Swedish massage?

There are a few stories to explain this, but a common one is that a Swedish fencing instructor named Per Henrik experimented with some techniques to treat an injured elbow in the 1830s, and he found them to be quite effective. A couple decades later, two Swedish brothers brought the techniques over to North America where they evolved into what we now know as Swedish Massage.
